Down with the Minnesota collective Rhymesayers, the MC known as Musab presents his sophomore release, SLICKS BOX, on the famed Oakland-based label Hieroglyphics Imperium. Playing up his alleged past as a street-pimp (as he claims, “My team took all the clientele from Heidi Fleiss”), Musab goes by the alias Minnesota Slicks, putting together 12 smoothed-out players’ anthems, heavy on 1970s funk and soul samples. At times, his mellow-voiced, confident smooth-talk conjures LL’s middleschool work, particularly on the slick tracks “Please Do Not Assume,” “Hat & Shoes,” and “Confessions of MN Slicks.”

Zimbabwe Legit – Where I’m At

Zimbabwe Legit

Where I’m At (feat. Mike G of The JBeez) Download
from Where I’m At (12-Inch) (2007, PH Music)

Incredible single featuring Mike G of The Jungle Brothers, from the upcoming Zimbabwe Legit release, House of Stone. A brand new album by the Z to the L featuring appearances by the likes of Vast Aire, Chubb Rock, stic.man of dead prez, Prince Po, YZ, Cadence and more. Who is Zimbabwe Legit? Consisting of emcees doomE Right and Akim, its a group formed by the two blood brothers as they burst onto the US hip-hop scene in the early 90s. They were a pioneering group in that they were one of the first African hip-hop artists to put out a record with a major US label.

As fate would have it though, that label would go under, and the brothers would remain in limbo – left to find their way in hip-hop through other endeavors, vehicles, forums and even groups. Out of this adversity O.U.O was born, a related group that consists of doomE and his cousin Pep.

More than a decade after Zimbabwe Legit had completed their full length album that never saw the light of day, they found a label and situation that would enable to release the lost tapes and re-introduce the world to the Brothers from the Mother.

The downtime for the group can hardly be considered a hiatus. After finishing college doomE Right remained on the scene releasing records, recording and performing with O.U.O. Akim continued to make a living as a performance artist in NYC embracing all the elements of hip-hop from dance to beatboxing and of course rhyming. He was even featured in the award winning documentary Freestyle alongside the likes of Talib Kweli, Supernatural, Grand Master Caz and others.

Brooklyn’s proudest battle MC delivers his best work yet with this release. Pumpkinhead got his big break by doing a promo for the “Stretch and Bobbito Show” (Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito the Barber). His first 12-inch records in 1998, (“Dynamic” and “Wack MC’s”) had great success on the radio charts. Since then, Pumpkinhead has worked with almost every underground MC in New York, recorded a Seagram’s Gin radio commercial, and toured in Australia, Japan, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Orange Moon Over Brooklyn features the banging tracks “Rock On”, “Trifactor” and “Swordfish”. Without a doubt, Pumpkinhead is back representing BK to the fullest!

In the spring of the year 2000, two students who met at a University of Pennsylvania talent show realized they had tremendous musical chemistry and decided that they wanted to make music together. Little did they know that they would be given the chance to revolutionize it.

When Chicago native Jabari Evans began developing his literary gift in elementary school, he’d write short stories, poems, and things of the like. As Evans drew toward hip-hop, a fateful meeting convinced him that he had a bright future as an MC. During a recruitment visit to the University of Pennsylvania he decided to enter a talent competition and perform a freestyle rap. Afterwards, many of the students urged Evans to introduce himself to Michael Aguilar aka DJ Double-O, a track star from New Jersey who had honed his DJing skills in high school and at the time was starting to get into producing beats. Evans, then known as J-Naledge, impressed Aguilar during their time together, and before Evans entered for his freshman year at Penn, Naledge and Double-O formed a partnership that eventually spawned the Kidz in the Hall.

“The reason why we make dope music is because our music isn’t forced or filtered. Musically, we are two like minded individuals and we strive to make a unique sound that is unordinary but portrays the lives of ordinary people,” says the 20 year old Naledge while lounging in a studio chair. “Hip Hop is like literature and not everybody is interested reading the same things. The rap game is full of either cheap comic books or people pretending to be Shakespeare no one is providing “A Raisin in the Sun” –like shit anymore. To me, ordinary people provide some of the most masterful and relatable stories.”

DJ Alibi – One Day

Russian born Mikhail Galkin–aka DJ Alibi–is poised to release his debut album One Day. Consisting of eleven purely instrumental tracks and five tracks complimented by his label mate Giant Panda, Boston Insight, a legendary MC from Alibifs home town Toronto, Theo 3, and Alibifs crew Bamboombox. One Day is a mixture of lush boom-bap rooted instrumentals and cleverly worded rhymes unlike any hip-hop record to date.

Born outside of Moscow, Russia 1986, Alibi has been steeped in music his whole life. At 4, Alibi picked up a violin, then a piano, a trumpet, a bass, a guitar, and others to follow. At the age of 12, Alibi’s family moved to Toronto, Canada where his love of music followed him. Within six months of living in his new hometown, Alibi had already made his first beat utilizing his newest instruments: turntables and samplers.

In 2005, the talented 19-year old sent a CD to Thes One (of the Los Angeles group People Under The Stairs) who immediately realized the talent in Alibi’s production. The CD Alibi sent to Thes (which got him his deal with Tres Records) was filled with lush and sophisticated arrangements that push musical boundaries and defy post hip-hop labeling. The now 21-year old Alibi shies away from the title prodigy, but to Tres Records staff, prodigy is an accurate word to describe this producer.

His first appearance on Tres was his mix and remixes on the KTRS AM Radio Show Vol. 2 that was included in Tres Presents: Shipping and Handling. Alibi’s sophisticated musical arrangements blend the rhythm, melody, and drums to stand out on their own without the need of an emcee. Alibi is the perfect balance of music theory and hip-hop intuition.
