More On This Album

We featured X Clan recently when the first single “Weapon X” dropped. Several months later, An incredible album brought to you by the underground rock/hiphop powerhouse Suburban Noize, has surfaced, with an all-star lineup of guests, including Damian Marley, TECH N9NE, DJ Quik, KRS-One, Chali 2NA of Jurassic 5, RBX, Abstract Rude, YZ (WHA!!), Daddy X of Kottonmouth Kings, Tri State of One Session and Jacoby Shadd of Papa Roach. The album is supremely slammin’ and its on some new skool meets old skool flava. You get the raw gritty lyrics driven by Brother J over some funk production styles that we remember from The X Clan. Do not get me wrong. This isnt the X Clan material some of you may be expecting. This album is the result of all the trials and tribulations the group has endured, from the groups break ups to the deaths of Sugar Shaft and Professor X. This album is more along the lines of Dark Sun Riders, with a new skool twist. Check it out!

BrokeBBoys giveaway #1

Cutler’s Idle Records and Empty Growlers mix won both the grand prize for Scion’s 2006 “Free Up Your Mix” contest as well as your mother’s unconditional esteem. DJ Cutler cut his teeth as a disc jockey during a very vibrant period in Buffalo hip hop history – listening to , watching, and learning from some of B-Lo’s finest DJ’s (Shay, Scott Down, Tommee, Lo Pro, Ritch the Snitch, Kream and Optimus Prime to name a few). During his life as a DJ, Cutler has freaked all kinds of funk and has blown all kinds of loot on nasty records. When not traversing the globe in search of good jazz on his bicycle, he does so in a van with his Buffalo- based group, Pseudo Slang.

Scion’s Audio/Visual label continues to channel the finest in emerging DJ and music talent with the next set of releases in its sampler CD and vinyl series. DJ Cutler carries the torch in the mixtape series with Scion CD Sampler v.16, while Big Daddy Kane and Percee P join forces with Connie Price & The Keystones for an exclusive 12″ joint. DJ Cutler, winner of Scion’s Free Up Your Mix contest, has put together a mix that showcases his scratching and juggling skills over a selection of underground hip-hop and breaks and features many local acts from his Buffalo, NY hometown.

Favela Rising

FAVELA RISING documents a man and a movement, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian squatter settlement) united. Haunted by the murders of his family and many of his friends, Anderson Sá is a former drug-trafficker who turns social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro’s most feared slum. Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies his community to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police.

At the dawn of liberation, just as collective mobility is overcoming all odds and Anderson’s grassroots Afro Reggae movement is at the height of its success, a tragic accident threatens to silence the movement forever. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this DVD go to favela educational programs in the ghettos of Brazil. from EV Records Presents Everything (2007, EV Records)

The first compilation from Chicago’s EV Records details exactly why we should give a shit– about EV Records, the Chicago rap scene, and the direction of hip-hop in general. Everything presents a myriad of EV Records’ artists dropping catchy beats and meaningful prose that reflect not only the presence of meaningful hip-hop, but EV’s high-concentration of talent. In the vein of Mos Def and Talib Kweli, the artists on Everything transcend the current industry standard with music that speaks to the mind. Despite hip-hop circles recent (and probably justified) complaints about sinking standards, EV Records’ roster shows creative and innovative artists producing relevant material that provokes both thought and movement. With a lineup of master producers, talents like Royce Da 5’9″, Psalm One, and ex-Binary Star One Be Lo, Everything proves that hip-hop is neither dead nor dying but, in fact, thriving in Chicago.
