Money, safe sex, and a whole lot of weed

Total Devastation: Many Clouds of Smoke
from Legalize It (1993, PGA Records)

Boy, does this bring back alot of memories… 1988, Total Devastation is born with members Soopa Dupa, Rasta Red Eye and DJ Tuf Cut Tim the Fat Beat Maker. Fast forward to 1993 and this San Francisco crew brings you one of the Bay Area’s top weed anthems (next to “5 on it” of course).

Many Clouds of smoke, one of 14 tracks off the “Legalize It” album, glorified the stuff alot of folks enjoy, that is natural and comes from the earth. It also encouraged activism by giving folks info on organizations that support the legalization of marijuana.

It was genius at best, pointing out the realities of life in a comedic fashion. Pretty much covers everything from “being a kid smoking for the first time” to Bill Clintons “I didnt inhale” and Marijuana legislation. The lyrics were great and the production was very dope. The track cleverly lifts the Billy Brooks-Forty Days sample (anyone remember “Luck of Lucien” by A Tribe Called Quest?)… makes for a great megamix if you got the OG record. The most memorable line on the track goes “There’s only three things in life that I need/Money, safe sex, and a whole lotta weed.”

Many Clouds of smoke did really well on the independent level, moving over 60,000 units and being a top 5 single on KMEL. Im unsure about how far it got outside of the Bay but to this day, It’s a Bay Area Gem. I havent smoked weed since 1998. Respect to all the tokers out there. Enjoy the track.
